An Evening with Sir Bob Geldof, musician, businessman and political activist – ‘The Future of Africa’
Tuesday 26th October 6:30pm, Mayfair

Bob Geldof is a musician, businessman and political activist. He is Chairman of the Band Aid Trust, the charitable trust dealing with poverty in Africa, a member of the Africa Progress Panel (APP), an independent authority on Africa reporting annually to the G8 and the African Union on their political commitments to the continent, and co-founder of ONE, the powerful Washington, London, Berlin and African lobby group focussed on better policy for and within Africa. Bob was appointed by Tony Blair to the Commission for Africa, which, in its report of March 2005, made recommendations to be implemented by the G8 to address the economic problems of the African continent. Bob founded Band Aid in 1984 in aid of the victims of starvation in Ethiopia. He went on to conceive and organise Live Aid for famine relief in 1985. In the same year, he established the Band Aid Trust to administer the US$150m raised through his activities with the Band Aid recording (1984), the Live Aid concert (1985), Sport Aid (1986) and, more recently, Live8 (2005). He remains chairman of the Trust which continues to operate in many African countries. In 1992 he established himself as a highly astute businessman with his co-ownership of the television production house Planet 24, which launched (among others) the pioneering and hugely successful shows The Big Breakfast (1992-2002) and Survivor (2000-present), prior to selling the company to Carlton TV. He is a co-founder of Ten Alps, the UK's largest independent factual television and digital media production company and has also co-founded several technology businesses including Deckchair.com and Groupcall. Bob has received many national and international awards for his music, writing, business and humanitarian work, including an honorary knighthood (1986), the EU Parliamentary Gold Medal, the North/South Council Prize, the Third World Prize, the Leaders of the 21st Century Award, and many honorary doctorates and fellowships from the world’s leading universities and institutions, along with the freedom of several cities. He received the Nobel Man of Peace award in 2005 and has been nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
