Pi/ 21st Century School Oxford - Breakfast with Sarah Harper
Thursday 23rd April 8:30am, Covent Garden

Professor Sarah Harper will outline some of the main demographic trends for Britain and the rest of the world, and the challenges and opportunities these present. Discussions will focus on the economic, social and political implications of population change.

Sarah Harper is Professor of Gerontology at Oxford University and Director of the Oxford Institute of Ageing, a multi-disciplinary research unit concerned with the implications of population ageing. Her research concerns globalization and global ageing, and the impact of population change, in particular the implications at the global, societal and individual level of the shift in population ages from predominantly young to predominantly older societies.

By 2030 half the population of Western Europe will be aged over 50; by 2050, there will be 2 billion older people globally, 500 million of them aged over 80. The Oxford Institute of Ageing investigates the wide-ranging impacts brought about by this unprecedented shift from young to old, and makes policy recommendations for how government, business and society can and should respond. As well as examining the implications for medical and social services, the Institute looks at the wider impact of ageing populations on, for example, business practices, the family, politics and consumer behaviour.
