Guest Speaker, Sir David Jones - "Leadership and Overcoming Adversity"
Sir David Jones recently became executive Chairman at JJB Sports, underlining his reputation as one of the UK’s leading retail operators and fire fighters.
He started his career at Great Universal Stores PLC before going on to Chief Executive of Grattan PLC, which merged with Next in 1986. He became Chief Executive of Next in 1988 and is credited with saving the business from the brink of collapse in the late 1980s and going on to build the high street fashion group in its current form. Its shares had reached 6p when Sir David took over from the founder, George Davis. Sir David admits that it was a mad impulse that prompted him to take on the job of trying to sort out JJB Sports after over 25 years spent coping with Parkinson’s disease and a bruising fight to secure new management at the Morrisons supermarket chain in 2006. He had intended to retire in 2006 when he retires from each of the Next and Morrisons boards. Sir David, 66, who has spoken of his struggle with Parkinson’s disease, co-founded the Cure Parkinson Trust, a registered charity dedicated to raising money to fund research to find a cure. He is also actively involved with many other voluntary organisations including the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. He is a keen rugby supporter and was a director of Leicester Tigers for 12 years. He was also President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 2005 and 2006. Sir David received his knighthood in 2009 for services to business and charity, having previously been awarded a CBE in 1999 for services to the community.
