"Dealing with the Regulatory Backlash in Financial Services"
Charlie McCreevy is the EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services who has been called by The Economist "a man with the terrible political habit of telling the truth." His five year term ends in October, amid a backlash against his pro-business stance. The former Irish Minister of Finance, seen as one of the architects of the Celtic Tiger miracle, trained as a chartered accountant before holding a series of ministerial posts in government.
The EU Commission’s controversial Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers has provoked a major outcry, mainly from hedge funds and private equity firms based in London. Commissioner McCreevy, who the leader of the Socialists in the European Parliament recently called "the deregulation Pope in Europe", will discuss its regulatory implications.
